Beauty: 5 ways to survive summer with a fringe

Fringes, bangs... whatever word you use for them, I think we can all agree that they come with some serious upkeep. Whether your hair is naturally curly or straight, I feel like fringes set their own challenges... slightly separated, too flat, too wavy, wonky or slight cowlick. It's sort of hilarious how many ways one little piece of hair can go wrong (and end up ruining your day). But as a long term fringe sufferer, there's seriously nothing like a good fringe day. You know the kind of day I mean, the ones where the stars align, everything blowdries and lies just right, and you wind up with a little slice of fringe perfection.

If like me, you have naturally curly hair, then summer can be some of the most difficult months to copy with having a fringe. So I thought with summer fast approaching, I'd put together a little guide to maintaining your fringe in the warm weather.

1. Regular cuts are key
Once your fringe grows past a certain length, it loses all style and shape. Which means it's going to be pretty much impossible to achieve your desired shape. Most hairdressers tend to offer fringe trims for free so it's worth just popping into the salon. Of if you're more of a DIY kinda gal, invest in some professional scissors (like these from Capital Hair and Beauty) to give it a little snip.

2. Hairspray is your friend
When humidity is messing up my styling, hairspray is one of the only products I've found to help hold everything in place. I tend to go for something with fairly strong hold, style my hair and spray my fringe with a little more than I would on the rest of my head (so it's just a little crispy). I don't tend to use hairspray day to day, but when I'm going away, it'll always be in my luggage!

3. Wash your fringe every day
As soon as the temperature rises, the combination of sweat and oils (usually from me trying to tug my hair back in place), mean that my fringe winds up looking like a hot mess by the end of the day. I don't usually wash my whole hair every day but I've found that when I'm in the heat, washing and blowdrying every day works better than just trying to restyle it the next day.

4. Use your accessories wisely
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of sun hats. Even more so since I started receiving treatment for my alopecia which thins my scalp and means I burn it very easily now! But actually they're a great way of keeping your fringe in place. I find that when I'm wearing a hat, the humidity might give it a thicker appearance but my hat will stop it from curling out of shape. A headscarf works too!

5.Learn how to do pretty plaits
Sometimes best laid plans just don't turn out that way. You might have tried hairspray, daily styling and even be holding it in place with your sunhat. But sometimes fringes just don't wanna stay in place. When that happens, usually a simply plait can be the best way to overcome an unruly fringe. A few minutes on Youtube will throw up plenty of great tutorials that are easy to learn!
