pattern cutting and pretty cakes

Breakfasts at The Butterfly Cabinet, snacking on special jubilee fondant fancies, getting back in touch with my creative side as well as adding to my transferable skills, and (maybe) changing my mind about kindles..

So tonight I went to my first pattern cutting class! Having decided on whim that I wanted to get back into textiles, I signed myself up for pattern cutting classes. As my friends (and of course regular readers) know, I like to keep myself busy and I figured be able to make patterns is quite a useful skill. And of course I have loads of gorgeous fabric I picked up in India on my travels. Tonight we started off with learning how to sketch standard blocks, and already I can't wait to move onto my personal blocks. I have so many ideas for tops and dresses that I want to make! In other news, my little brother Phillip has been buying a Kindle. Now I'm really not sure how I feel about it, because although I appreciate how useful it is to be able to carry hundreds of books around with you, I can't escape the fact that I like books. I don't think that seeing I'm 98% of the way through a book gives you the same feeling as when you've been reading something really great and knowing you only have a couple pages left! I think working for a publishing company also makes me a little biased since although I love the idea of them, I certainly don't want them to make the printed word redundant. I tried it out properly today and sat for a couple of hours reading Wilde's essay, The Soul of Man Under Socialism (recommended to me by a brilliant writer- and well worth the read). I hate to admit it but I was totally seduced. I'm not quite ready to invest in one, but it's definitely only a matter of time..

  1. Awesome getting into pattern making! I don't have the patience for patterns and so that's why I haven't made anything too difficult. But I love sewing! And I love my Kindle. I know what you mean about the realness of books, but I actually like using my Kindle on trips or just around the house. :) <3

  3. I miss the Butterfly Cabinet!

O, and I have a Kindle. I am a book lover so I only use it for books that I may not want to admit I am reading such as The Hunger Games :P and I also use it for classes with books I do not want to own. I definitely think it has it's place. :)

  6. I definitely like the idea of a kindle, although there is nothing more satisfying than holding an actual book, rather than reading something from a screen. I hope you had a lovely time at the pattern cutting class. I always like to be learning new things and taking classes, otherwise it doesn't really seem like I'm moving forward. xx
